Organizations are an important building block of society. They affect the distribution of money, power, and happiness in society (Handel 2003: 4).
1) First we will review why we study organizations, and what 20th century studies have taught us.
2) We will focus on more recent approaches to organizations, in which worker motivation and well-being are considered keys to economic performance.
3) We will then discuss alternatives to capitalistic bureaucracy, through management strategies of empowerment, participatory management, worker ownership, or self-management.
4) We will also consider the relations between gender and organizations, and the advantages to embracing parity as well as diverse values and leadership characteristics in the workplace.
